What’s Really in Your Shampoo?

Did you ever consider reading the label on your shampoo bottle?

Well, try reading it and remember the longer the list the more chemicals and toxins are in it.

Also, one common ingredient is “Sodium Lauryl Sulphate”, which can have other similar names…

This is a anionic sufactant that helps produce lots of suds when washing your hair.  This may make you feel like your hair is cleaner, but it may also be causing health issues.

“Sodium Lauryl Sulphate” may also be a carcinogenic, meaning it is cancer-causing.

So if you are concerned about this at all you may want to find something else.

Finally ‘GREEN’ Jewellery!

Have you ever found a ‘GREEN’ jewellery business?  Well, I finally did and can’t wait to share it with you!  I suppose with so many people and businesses going ‘GREEN’ these days, there would have to be some type of ‘GREEN’ jewellery, but they are certainly not easy to find.

The company I did find is: Brilliant Earth!

This company has been raising awareness of re-emerging concerns about conflict diamonds.

They have found that many diamond deposits found in Zimbabwe are now under government control.  Terrible things have happened there including torture and murders even though the stones are being sold as ‘conflict-free’.

The diamonds from Brilliant Earth however, are sourced directly from mines with impeccable labor and environmental standards.  Their oxidized silver Earth digger’s pendant represents the plight of diamond diggers in Africa and support of their cause.  They even have an education campaign to help consumers understand the current diamond industry and what to expect from retailers.

Brilliant Earth offers helpful buying tips as well as gifts to match any style or price.

Brilliant Earth has found an alternative to mining like their silver peace pendant made from 100% recycled silver, as seen here: Recycled Silver

They are also participating in the very first fair-trade gold program with gold petroglyph-inspired pendants that reflect their commitment to the well-being of communities that make a living from mining.

For designs that promote awareness of the Earth, here is Brilliant Earth’s buying guide: Buying Guide

Reptiles, Reptiles and More Reptiles…!

My husband, son and I went to Reptilia the other day.  Wow, was it amazing and the service was even better!

I am writing this in my ‘green’ blog, because Reptilia is all about reptiles and thus the environment.  Reptilia is a zoo that promotes the preservation of green and wild spaces for the environment.  They rescue abused and abandoned reptiles including endangered species like snakes and lizards.

The cost is reasonable to a little high, but well worth it!  The place is full of reptiles, reptiles and more reptiles…and amphibians…

From small frogs including the tiniest bright blue poison arrow frogs to reptiles like a gigantic reticulated python!

There was a blood python and an African tortoise that they took out of the display for all to see.  We saw a white crocodile that was amazing, it was about twelve feet long!

Even I was quite fascinated.

We were able to touch the turtle and the skin on the blood python, which was quite smooth…by the way!

But the highlight of it all was with my son…

He happened to find a cricket jumping around the floor and picked it up.  The curator doing one of the tours was incredibly nice and very informative.  He asked my son if he wanted to feed a “Bearded Dragon”!  How cool is that?

He brought my son right over to the display and opened it.  He held his hand and helped him feed the “Bearded Dragon”, which is a type of lizard.  We watched the dragon’s tongue roll out to eat the cricket.

From the girl taking care of and feeding the animals, to the curator and the staff at the counter, all are to be commended on their professionalism and fantastic service!

It was a wonderful afternoon and we highly recommend it to anyone with children!

Sincerely,

Jill

LIPSTICK AND LEAD?

Recently there has been an e-mail going around about lead in lipstick.  This is an issue that has been discussed now for quite sometime.

So, is there really lead in lipstick or not?  Yes, it has been found in many brands.  I have included a copy below of the recent e-mail that has been circulating.

Now, this may not concern you or you may wonder:

How much lead is really in my lipstick?  Is it enough to harm me or my family?

Let’s think about this for a minute…

Do you really want even a minute amount in your lipstick?  Personally, I do NOT!  People may not understand that even if it is a small amount found in your lipstick, this amount builds up overtime.  Please be aware that lead can actually lead to cancer!

Remember that although it might be a minute amount found in your lipstick, this can slowly, gradually lead to many types of autoimmune diseases.

Please be aware that there are other options.  You are not limited to wearing lipstick with lead, unless of course you choose to do so and the idea of lipstick containing lead does not bother you…

I can help as far as finding places to purchase cosmetics that do NOT contain lead.  Please feel free to ask…

For your information, I have listed two websites with more details about lead found in lipstick.

Healthy Home/Healthy Family

If you have a home that is full of toxins it could be harming you and your family.

Did you know that bottles of cleaners like ‘Javex’ for example leach out the toxins from the bottles and you could be breathing that in?  Even from under the bathroom and kitchen cabinets these toxins leach out.

Also, are you aware that when you use chemicals in the dishwasher they circulate around the kitchen from the steam of the dishwasher?  This steam is much more harmful to your children with their small organs that are still developing.

Another thing you should be aware of is the harmful fillers used in your laundry detergent.  Did you realize they use things like quills, peanut shells and fibreglass as fillers?  These fillers help with the cleaning process.

I will continue to inform you of the harm that products have on you and your family.

So, when people talk about using ‘GREENER’ products they aren’t just ‘saying’ that…so maybe it is worthwhile to listen!

For help with ‘greening’ your home please ask, I would be glad to help!

Sincerely,

Jill
